Every serious and even not quite as serious fan of Washington wines should hasten to get the 2013 Washington State Wine Tour Guide, featuring no less than 11 images of mine from my many travels around the state's wine regions! You can find a hard copy of the Guide at most wine shops and many wineries throughout Washington. Or you can click here and get the online version. I'm very lucky to be associated with the creative folks at Destination Media who produce the annual guide and embrace my work as complimentary to the Guide's sharp and contemporary design (big Shout Out to designer Jana Rekosh). Get the Guide and get going on a Washington wine tour! And watch for me – I'm the guy with the camera and the big smile, happily working on the 2014 Wine Guide!

Enjoy!

With the holidays done, time to start making plans for 2013 wine tasting! January's free image is Les Collines Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. This renown producer of high quality grapes sources to many of our state's highly rated and regarded winemakers. Set against the Blue Mountains, Les Collines is surely one of Washington's most picturesque vineyards. Wandering around on a crisp clear morning, what caught my eye were the rows of color that stretched endlessly east, accented by the almost always dramatic clouds found in the Walla Walla sky.

This month's image – The Colors of Crush -- comes from the esteemed Connor Lee vineyard, source of distinguished and distinctive grapes used by many of Washington's best winemakers. While not generally open to the public (or even all that accessible for that matter), I was photographing winemaker Kristina Van Loben Sels of Arbor Crest as she inspected her block of grapes just prior to harvest. A bit of morning mist followed by a touch of sun breaking through the cloud cover -- voila! A capture of crush color, one of my favorite from this bountiful harvest season. Conner Lee is just south of Othello on Radar Hill. Enjoy the tasting notes from Kristina describing her 2008 Cab Franc – made entirely from Connor Lee grapes.

With harvest in full swing, now is the time to visit wineries and vineyards for scene after endless beautiful scene of grapes ready for crush. So October's free download comes from Three Rivers Winery in Walla Walla in eastern Washington. Home to nearly 100 wineries, W2 is amongst my favorite regular destinations for wine photography and tastings. I captured this vineyard view in breaking dawn light.

Three Rivers Winery is one the most heralded of this great AVA's wineries. Located just west of town, Three Rivers Winery sits on 16-acre site which houses beautiful vineyards and the 18,000 sq. ft. tasting room and production facility. Winemaker Holly Turner's creations have corralled a passel of awards and acclaim. Stop in at their superb tasting room for a sip of Washington's best grapes at their finest.

July's free download comes from the beautiful Lake Chelan AVA in central Washington.

With 17 wineries in full operation and more coming, Lake Chelan is a "comer" in Washington's wine industry. Plush vineyards like Benson Vineyards Estate Winery pictured here produce wines that wine writer Paul Gregutt describes quite elegantly: "The whites — especially riesling and viognier, are beautifully aromatic. The reds are subtle and elegant rather than broadly powerful." Vineyards benefit from the influence of huge Lake Chelan that prevents extreme temperatures year round.

Ably supported by an ever-widening selection of restaurants -- I'm partial to the creative fare at Café Manson, fell in love with the pizza at Local Myth and heartily recommend the bistro at Vin du Lac for the tasty creations of chef Francis St. Dennis -- and accommodations that range from spartan to posh, Lake Chelan should be on your list for wine weekends. http://www.lakechelanwinevalley.com/.

April's free download is Spokane's Arbor Crest Wine Cellars where I'm staging my exhibit "Art from the Vine" all month long!

Overlooking the Spokane Valley and surrounding mountains, the Arbor Crest Cliff House tasting room comes complete with a gazebo, a small stage for outdoor concerts (a staple for the locals who find the mix of wine, music and sun irresistible), beautifully landscaped lawns and this picturesque small vineyard from its early days as Spokane's first working vineyard.

This tasting room certainly offers one of the state's best views atop a volcanic outcrop some 450 feet above the Spokane River. And you won't find a nicer group of wine people than the Arbor Crest team, lead by winemaker Kristina Mielke-van Loben Sels – daughter and niece to winery co-founders – and husband and general manager Jim. With an ever-expanding range of wines, Arbor Crest consistently notches awards for its Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Any visit to Spokane should have the Arbor Crest Cliff House on its must-see list.

"Art from the Vine" is staged at Arbor Crest's downtown tasting room (I'm appearing on April 6 from 6-9 for the artist's reception). Come by for a sip and a see! http://www.arborcrest.com/

March is Washington Wine month and so I salute all the Washington wineries with a raised glass and grapes from Tefft Cellars situated in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA in Outlook. It's my pleasure to work often with owners Paul Tollner and Rhonda Taylor who give me ready access to their vineyards and tasting rooms (my exhibit "Art from the Vine" was first staged in their elegant Woodinville digs). And I'm a huge fan of their Italian-style reds – Villa Toscana, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and especially the Estate Nebbiolo that always prompts a happy thought of Italy. New winemaker Brian Wavernek brings a distinct flair and imagination to Tefft's future offerings. Pay a visit and raise a glass to a Washington wine that aptly represents the hard-working 700 plus Washington wineries. www.tefftcellars.com

Moon and Dawn over the Vines.
This dramatic image of the dawn light painting the western sky and full moon is from the vineyards of Cave B Estate Winery, an award-winning boutique winery located in the Columbia Valley wine region that is soon to be designated the Ancient Lakes AVA. Nestled alongside the majestic Columbia River (near the Gorge of rock concert fame), Cave B offers not only some of the best wines in Washington but also a contemporary inn and a four-star restaurant. Cave B is one of my favorite wine "getaways."

September's free image is from Walla Walla, one of the world's great AVAs, and a personal favorite region to photograph. Walla Walla is home to nearly 200 wineries, vast acreage of grapes and townfolk who love wine and wine lovers. If you're looking for a wine weekend away from the bustle of Napa that offers world class wines – particularly merlots - in a relaxed setting, W2 is the place for you! This image of dawn light over a Walla Walla vineyard is from my new exhibit "Art from the Vine" on display at Nectar Tasting Room in Spokane, WA.

July's free image is from the wine producing farm Franzosi in Puegnago in Italy's Lake Garda area. This area on the south side of the beautiful Lake Garda region is home to many vineyards. The a very fruity and light red wine Bardolino is probably the best known Lake Garda wine but there are many other great wines to enjoy from this region. A particular favorite is Valpolicella and the crisp white Soave. A visit to the Franzosi farm and superb tasting room offers not only a range of wonderful wines but olive oils and other farm-raised products. On your next wine tour of Italy, consider a two-three day stay in Garda! www.cantinefranzosi.com/

June's image is also from the new exhibit Art from the Vine on display now at Tefft Cellars in Woodinville, WA. This one shows off the digital tools I'm using to nudge some of my wine images towards a more fine art direction. Colors of Crush 2 comes from Sonoma during the height of the autumn crush season. Captured on gallery wrapped canvas, this is one of my favorites from the exhibit.

May's free desktop download is from the Verrazzano estate in Tuscany – one of my favorite Chianti vineyards – captured at lunch time after a thoroughly enjoyable tour!

The image is also a sneak peek at my new exhibit "Art from the Vine" – an offshoot direction I'm exploring with my images that ventures a bit closer to fine art without sacrificing all the photographic quality of the image. art from the vine I've incorporated some dynamic software tools to underscore and augment the details, patterns and colors of the original image. The exhibit will feature select wine images printed on gallery style canvas wraps or framed metallic-coated paper (which adds an almost three-dimensional effect). Both papers are also a step to the side from traditional photo papers.

I'm particularly pleased to open the exhibit at Tefft Cellars in Woodinville, surely one of the most beautiful tasting rooms in the area. The Tuscan-style colors and broad walls are a perfect complement to my work. The exhibit opens to a private viewing exclusively for Tefft Wine Club members on June 4. The exhibit opens to all starting June 5 – I'll be there for the Artist Reception from 2-6 so stop in, enjoy the great Tefft wines (I'm partial to Villa Toscana) and view my new exhibit – "Art from the Vine!" Salute!

Climb to the Vine
Winemakers and grape growers the world over readily will tell you that theirs is a difficult craft, full of long days and much hard labor. This is doubly so for Italy's Cinque Terra winemakers. Literally carved out of the rock wall of sloping hills, these vineyards rise steeply to form peaks overlooking the villages and the sea. Each day the winemakers climb to tend to their vines and during crush, methodically descend laden with a bin of grapes on their shoulders. With few exceptions, there’s not much technology at work here – just fierce determination to produce quality wine. Among the enjoyable white wines produced: Vermentino; Pigato DOC Riviera Ligure di Ponente, Cinque Terre DOC 5 Terre and desert wine Sciacchetrà. This image was captured in mid-September.

Soft early morning sunlight splays across the Spring Valley Vineyard in Walla Walla's wonderful wine country – a favorite winery of mine to sip and shoot! Located about 10 miles north of Walla Walla, the vineyard grows its grapes alongside more traditional farm crops which makes for wonderful textures and patterns to capture in the camera. Superb wines that receive strong and consistent acclaim. www.springvalleyvineyard.com
